People say “chess” and mean the 8×8 western game with bishops and queens. Chinese chess — Xiangqi — is a cousin at another table: nine files, ten ranks, a river, a palace, and a cannon that captures by jumping a screen. If you came here to stop mixing them up, good. The board above plays the Chinese side.

We don’t host western chess on this domain. Here we only draw the line so you stop importing bishop rules onto an elephant.

• This page is not a western chess tutorial.
• No castling. No promotion parade. Soldiers that reach the last rank keep sliding sideways.
• No stalemate draw here — a side with no legal move loses.
• Don’t import en passant or queen trades into Xiangqi.

Differences

What carries, what doesn’t

What carries: chariot ≈ rook, horse ≈ knight with a limp, trap the royalty, fight for open lines. What doesn’t: board size, river, palace lock on the general, cannon screen captures, elephants that never cross, soldiers that don’t become queens, and no western stalemate draw.

If you wanted knights on an 8×8 board, wrong table — that game lives elsewhere. This domain only hosts the river game.

Is Xiangqi harder?

Different, not harder. Xiangqi is sharper early because the cannons are already loaded. Western chess has its own opening books and endgame studies. Your first language on the board matters more than internet rankings. Sit down, get checked once, and the argument gets quieter.
