Xiangqi is the name a lot of players use when they mean Chinese chess. Same nine-by-ten board. Same river painted across the middle. Same cannon that needs a screen before it captures. If you typed the pinyin and landed here, you’re not in the wrong house — you’re at the door with the shorter name.

When to use

You searched “xiangqi” and want to know it’s the same game. You’re teaching someone who only knows the English name.

You already play and just want a tougher AI — go to vs computer. You need piece-by-piece moves — open pieces. You meant western chess — leave for another site. You meant a club meetup — we don’t run clubs.

Names

One game, two labels

Xiangqi (象棋) is what the game is called where it is played most. Chinese chess is the English translation people type into search bars. Neither label changes the geometry: nine files, ten ranks, a river, two palaces, a cannon that needs a screen.

If a relative only says “Chinese chess,” send them home. If they only say “xiangqi,” you’re already on the right door. The board doesn’t care which word you used to find it.

A lot of “xiangqi club” searches want a real room with folding tables and tea. We don’t run that calendar. This URL is a quiet browser board — move, reply, leave when the light fails.
